Job Summary

Ensure the availability, performance, integrity, and security of the organization's PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres database systems, including high-availability clusters, backup/recovery infrastructure, and scheduled maintenance operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

     Installation & configuration

  • Install, configure, and upgrade PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres servers across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Set up database instances, roles, permissions, and connection settings.
  • Configure and maintain connection pooling using Pgpool-II or PgBouncer, based on workload and architecture needs.
  • Design, deploy, and manage high-availability clusters using EDB Postgres Failover Manager (EFM).
  • Operate multi-node clusters with automated failover, load balancing, and query routing; validate failover readiness.
  • Configure and manage streaming and logical replication.
  • Monitor replication lag and maintain standby servers.

    Performance tuning & optimization

  • Tune queries, indexes, and server configuration parameters (memory, checkpoints, WAL, autovacuum settings).
  • Analyze query plans (EXPLAIN/ANALYZE) to identify and resolve bottlenecks, locking, and slow queries.
  • Perform capacity planning and manage growth of the database estate.
  • Configure and tune autovacuum (thresholds, scale factors, cost limits, per-table overrides) to control table and index bloat.
  • Run manual VACUUM ANALYZE and VACUUM FULL based on need, managing the trade-off between space reclamation and locking impact.
  • Monitor dead tuples, transaction ID wraparound, and bloat, and act proactively to prevent performance degradation.
  • Design and implement table partitioning (range, list, hash) for large tables to improve performance and manageability.
  • Manage partition lifecycle — creating, attaching, detaching, and pruning partitions.
  • Optimize queries to benefit from partition pruning and maintain partitioned indexes.

    Scheduled / off-hours maintenance

  • Plan and execute maintenance during night or low-traffic windows to minimize impact on production.
  • Perform data slimming — archiving, purging, or trimming obsolete data to control database size.
  • Run VACUUM ANALYZE or VACUUM FULL as required based on bloat and workload conditions.
  • Schedule reindexing and other heavy maintenance within approved windows.
  • Monitor index health and bloat, and perform reindexing (including REINDEX CONCURRENTLY) to restore performance.
  • Schedule reindexing to minimize impact on production workloads.

    Backup & recovery (pgBackRest)

  • Design and manage backup strategies using pgBackRest — full, differential, and incremental backups.
  • Configure and maintain pgBackRest repositories (local and/or remote/offsite), retention policies, and WAL archiving.
  • Perform and regularly test point-in-time recovery (PITR) and restore procedures.

    Security & compliance

  • Manage user access, roles, and privileges following least-privilege principles.
  • Apply security patches and enforce data protection and compliance requirements.
  • Audit database activity as required.

    Monitoring & incident response

  • Set up monitoring and alerting for availability, performance, replication, vacuum/bloat, and backup status.
  • Respond to incidents and perform root-cause analysis.

    Collaboration

  • Work with developers to review schema design, queries, and data models.
  • Support application and infrastructure teams with database deployments and issues.
  • Document configurations, cluster architecture, backup/recovery procedures, and maintenance standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience administering PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres in production.
  • Strong SQL and knowledge of database internals (query planning, indexing, MVCC, vacuum mechanics).
  • Hands-on experience with table partitioning, reindexing, and autovacuum tuning at scale.
  • Experience with connection pooling using Pgpool-II and/or PgBouncer.
  • Experience with EDB Postgres Failover Manager (EFM) and high-availability clusters.
  • Experience configuring and managing pgBackRest backup repositories and PITR.
  • Experience with streaming/logical replication and high availability.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix administration and shell scripting.
  • Willingness to perform scheduled maintenance during off-hours/night windows.
  • Understanding of monitoring tools and database security practices.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent experience; PostgreSQL/EDB certification a plus.
