WING (Cambodia) Limited Specialised Bank has collected donations amounting to $21,016.70 since the launch of its “Initiative to Support Communities in Need Amid Covid-19” campaign to benefit cash-strapped tour guides and tuk-tuk drivers.

The Kingdom’s leading mobile banking service provider initiated the campaign with the support of The Phnom Penh Post in early April and garnered support from more than 7,800 donors.

Wing staff, customers and Wing Cash Xpress agents, as well as employees of the Royal Group have stepped in to support the charity drive which aims to help lessen the accute financial burden facing tuk-tuk drivers and tour guides.

The donations were channelled through the Wing Money App and Wing Cash Xpress agents across Cambodia.

Manu Rajan, the CEO of Wing, said the initiative is a show of solidarity at a critical time as much of the world grapples with a pandemic that has paralysed global trade and the world economy, with those in the informal sectors suffering the most.
“[These] donations play a crucial role in helping our communities during this tough time. Not only do they help those in need, but they also show our solidarity as a nation to help each other out of the hardship caused by the pandemic.

“That is the need of the hour, and we are thrilled to have such support,” Manu said.

He added that as a responsible corporate citizen, the company is mindful not only of its safety and health, but also that of its neighbours in need and suffering countrymen.

“Wing considers it our responsibility as the largest mobile financial services company in Cambodia to mobilise resources and people to help our communities during these difficult times,” Manu said.

The Phnom Penh Post publisher and CEO Ly Tayseng said: “We are happy to partner with Wing in this initiative to support tuk-tuk drivers and tour guides whose financial position has been gravely affected during this pandemic.

“As one of the largest print and online media companies in the Kingdom, with The Phnom Penh Post and Post Khmer being among the few national newspapers in Cambodia, we realise the importance of our role in disseminating important and relevant news and information.

“It is in the national interest that [corporations] come together to do our part to assist the less fortunate in this time of need. The partnership of The Phnom Penh Post as the official media for Wing in this initiative is one such example.

Ngil Sokk llap, a Wing Cash Xpress agent in Phnom Penh who donated $25 through the Wing Money App, welcomed the initiative, echoing Manu and Tayseng in saying that her contribution, however small, was a show of solidarity.
“I cannot ignore [vulnerable] communities during this difficult time. If we have more than enough to eat, we need to share it with one another. Small contributions become important when people join hands to help those in need,” she said.

Phnom Penh-based phone repairer Chea Rady held a similar view as Illap, saying that he had made his donation to support the less fortunate.

“I believe my small donation of $12 through Wing will help vulnerable people who are suffering during the pandemic,” he said.

Tuk-tuk drivers and tour guides can visit either Wing’s head office in Phnom Penh or Wing’s representative office in Siem Reap to receive $30 of credit in their Wing account.

Donations are ongoing and can be made through more than 7,500 Wing Cash Xpress agents across the Kingdom or via its digital platforms – in riel through account number 03210000 and US dollars through 03310000.
