Series 21: Savings and Fixed Deposits in Cambodia: Interest, Terms and How to Choose

A clear guide to building savings—from flexible access to longer-term returns.

Published on: Sep 18, 2026

A bank balance does not automatically become savings. Without a clear purpose, money set aside can easily return to everyday spending.

If you are comparing a savings account in Cambodia with a fixed deposit in Cambodia, start with access. A savings account keeps money available, goal-based saving supports a specific plan, and a fixed deposit provides a predictable return for funds that can remain until maturity.

Choose Based on When You Need the Money

The best way to save money is to match the account with when you plan to use the funds.

Savings option
Best use
Access

Personal savings account

Emergencies and upcoming expenses

Available when needed

Goal-based savings

Education, travel, a home or business

Managed around a target

Fixed deposit

Money reserved for a future date

Normally held until maturity

These savings options in Cambodia can work together. You can keep emergency savings accessible, build towards a planned expense and place long-term savings in a fixed deposit.

The important line is between money you may need and money you can commit. Locking funds away too early may force you to close the deposit before maturity and lose part or all of the expected interest.

Know What You Are Committing

A fixed deposit holds your money for an agreed period at a set deposit interest rate. If you keep the funds until maturity, the return is more predictable than the interest from a regular savings account.

A term deposit in Cambodia may run for several months or years. Longer fixed deposit terms may offer higher interest, but your money will also remain committed for longer.

Before opening one, check:

  • The minimum fixed deposit
  • The available deposit periods
  • The fixed deposit interest rate
  • Monthly or maturity interest payment
  • Early-withdrawal conditions
  • Partial-withdrawal rules
  • Withholding tax
  • Renewal instructions at fixed deposit maturity

Do not select a three-year term for money you may need next year. Choose the maturity date first, then compare the available rates for that period.

You can also use the bank’s official calculator to calculate deposit interest based on the amount, currency, term and interest-payment option. The result is normally an estimate, so confirm the final conditions before opening the deposit.

Compare Fixed Deposit Rates and Final Returns

When comparing fixed deposit rates in Cambodia, use the same currency, term and payment schedule. A rate paid at maturity may differ from a rate offered when interest is paid monthly.

Tax can also reduce the final interest received. Check whether the advertised rate is before tax and how the bank will pay the fixed deposit interest.

Early withdrawal matters just as much as the rate. Closing a deposit before maturity may reduce the interest or remove it entirely. If you expect to need regular access, a savings account may be more suitable even when its savings interest rate is lower.

Rates can change. Confirm the latest information through the bank’s official website, app or branch.

Choose Monthly Interest or Interest at Maturity

Monthly interest provides regular payments during the deposit term. Interest paid at maturity keeps the return together until the deposit ends.

Compare both options before opening the account. The available fixed deposit interest rate may differ depending on the payment schedule.

Confirm What Happens at Maturity

At fixed deposit maturity, the bank may return the principal and interest to your linked account or renew the deposit, depending on your instructions.

Check whether renewal is automatic and which rate will apply. A renewed deposit may use the rate available on the renewal date rather than the original rate.

Plan for Early Withdrawal

Early withdrawal should be treated as a last option. Depending on the fixed deposit terms, you may receive a lower savings interest rate or no interest.

Keep short-term expenses and emergency savings outside the deposit. This protects the expected return and avoids closing the account before maturity.

Review the Deposit Before Confirming

Before opening a USD fixed deposit or KHR fixed deposit, review the amount, term, interest rate, payment schedule, tax and maturity instructions.

Use the bank’s official tool to calculate deposit interest, but treat the result as an estimate. Confirm the final rate and conditions before submitting the deposit.

Save in the Currency You Will Use

Match the deposit currency with the future expense.

A KHR fixed deposit can support school fees, household expenses or business costs that will be paid in Khmer Riel. It also supports the wider use of Cambodia’s national currency.

A USD fixed deposit may suit a goal priced in US dollars. Saving in the currency you expect to use can reduce unnecessary conversion and exposure to exchange-rate changes.

If your future expenses involve both currencies, you may divide your savings between KHR and USD rather than convert the full amount later.

Formal Saving Is Gaining Ground

The share of Cambodian adults who saved through a financial institution increased from 6.7% in 2021 to 9.3% in 2024, according to the World Bank’s Global Findex Database 2025.

The increase points to gradual growth in formal saving. The practical value, however, comes from using the right account—keeping some money accessible, separating funds for specific goals and earning a return on money reserved for later.

Grow Long-Term Savings With a Wing Bank Fixed Deposit

A Wing Bank Fixed Deposit is designed for money you can leave untouched until a selected date. You can open the deposit in USD or KHR and choose a term from one to 60 months.

The minimum fixed deposit is USD 10 or KHR 40,000. You can receive interest monthly or at maturity, depending on the selected term.

Published Wing Bank fixed deposit rates reach up to 5.5% per annum for selected longer terms when interest is paid at maturity. Partial withdrawals are not available.

If you close the deposit early, you may receive the savings rate. Keep money needed for emergencies and near-term expenses outside the fixed deposit.

You can open and monitor the deposit through the Wing Bank App or receive assistance at a Wing Bank branch.
