How to Send and Receive Money Overseas from Cambodia

Fees, exchange rates, requirements and delivery times explained simply.

As economies grow and connect faster, more people are working, studying and building their lives far from home, and staying in touch with the people they support has become part of everyday life for many Cambodian families. With digital banking and simpler banking processes, sending and receiving money across borders is more common and more convenient than ever.

So, if you would like to transfer money to your loved ones from or to Cambodia, how can you do it? Here are five simple steps to help you choose the right option and prepare your transfer with confidence.

1. Choose How the Recipient Will Receive the Money

Start with the recipient's needs, because the right option depends on the destination, amount and preferred delivery method.

  • Bank deposit: suitable for tuition, supplier payments and larger amounts that need a banking record.
  • Cash pickup: useful when the recipient needs quick access or has no eligible bank account.
  • SWIFT transfer: a direct bank-to-bank option for international payments.

2. Compare the Final Amount Received

A low transfer fee does not always mean a lower total cost, since the exchange rate and third-party charges can also affect what arrives. Before confirming, check the fee, the exchange rate, the amount the recipient will receive in their own currency, any intermediary or receiving-bank charges, and the expected processing time. Comparing the final amount gives you a clearer view of the total cost.

3. Prepare the Correct Information

Requirements vary by service and destination, so enter the recipient's name exactly as it appears on their identification or bank account. For a bank transfer, prepare the bank name, account number and SWIFT code, together with any bank or branch codes the destination requires, as incorrect details can delay the transfer or cause it to be returned. Always use a regulated provider, and never share your PIN, password or OTP with anyone.

4. Check the Limit and Delivery Time

Transfer limits and delivery times vary by provider, destination and channel. Some transfers arrive within minutes, while others take several business days, particularly when weekends, public holidays, compliance checks, currency conversion or intermediary banks are involved. For urgent payments, confirm the timing first, and keep your receipt and reference number until the recipient confirms the funds have arrived.

5. Check the Country

Whether you are sending money to South Korea, China, Japan, Thailand or Malaysia, the available services differ by country.

Confirm the delivery method, receiving currency, required bank codes, current fee, exchange rate and transfer limit. Review the latest conditions before every transfer because these details may change.

Receiving Money From Overseas

For a bank deposit, give the sender your account name, account number, bank name and SWIFT code, making sure your name matches the one registered on the account. For cash pickup, keep your transaction reference and valid identification ready, and share the reference only with the sender or an authorised provider. It also helps to ask the sender whether fees are paid upfront or deducted during processing, so you know how much to expect.
