In celebration of World Environment Month, Wing Bank, in collaboration with the authorities of Sangkat Stoeung Mean Chey 3 and Khan Mean Chey, launched a community-driven campaign to tackle plastic pollution along Veng Sreng Street—one of Phnom Penh’s most active commercial hubs.

Held under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the campaign aimed to raise awareness among market vendors and local residents about the environmental and health impacts of single-use plastics, while promoting practical and sustainable alternatives.

“Plastic pollution is not just an urban challenge—it affects our health, economy, and future generations,” said Mr. Bunthe Hor, Deputy CEO of Wing Bank. “When plastic waste clogs drainage systems, it causes flooding. When burned, it releases toxic fumes. And when it enters the food chain, it threatens both wildlife and human well-being. This is why our collective response is so urgent.”

Plastic waste remains one of the most pressing environmental issues in Cambodia. According to the Ministry of Environment, the country generates approximately 4 million tons of waste each year—60 percent of which is organic and 20 percent plastic, primarily single-use items such as foam boxes, plastic bottles, and bags. The remaining portion includes miscellaneous and improperly disposed waste. In urban areas like Phnom Penh, mismanaged plastic waste contributes to blocked drainage, flash floods, and environmental degradation—posing serious risks to public health and infrastructure.

In direct response to these challenges, more than 250 Wing Bank staff joined local authorities and residents to take meaningful action. The campaign featured a variety of on-the-ground efforts, including door-to-door outreach to market vendors with eco-education materials, on-site discussions introducing practical alternatives to plastic packaging, community clean-up efforts along Veng Sreng Street, and the installation of public signage to encourage responsible waste disposal and promote environmental accountability. As part of its community commitment, Wing Bank donated essential supplies to Sangkat Stoeung Mean Chey 3 and Khan Mean Chey for distribution to households in need.

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, reinforcing Wing Bank’s commitment to driving positive environmental impact alongside its mission in inclusive finance.

From digital systems that reduce paper use to biodegradable bank cards, the bank is committed to minimizing its ecological footprint. It also promotes green financing, supports eco-conscious SMEs, and encourages energy-saving and waste reduction practices in its offices. Wing Bank will continue advancing environmental outreach—embedding eco-awareness into financial literacy and championing sustainable solutions that benefit communities and protect Cambodia’s environment.
