Phou Lin Builds Homegrown HR Tech with Regional Reach

What began as a university dream inspired by Microsoft has grown into BeOne Platform, a Cambodian-built tech solution now serving more than 1,000 businesses, as CEO Phou Lin drives its expansion with a focus on locally tailored innovation and growing international ambition

What began as a university dream to build software on par with Microsoft has evolved into a platform now powering more than 1,000 businesses across Cambodia, with Phou Lin positioning BeOne Platform as a homegrown tech solution with global ambition.

With more than a decade of experience in software development Lin, CEO of BeOne Platform, is driven by a mission to empower Cambodian businesses through innovative, tailored IT solutions, delivering high‑quality web and mobile applications designed around each client’s needs.

Launched in 2020, BeOne began gaining real traction in 2023, as companies turned to its HR software to tackle everyday workforce challenges - from attendance tracking to leave requests - through mobile-friendly systems built to save time and cut costs.

Beginning from a dream

Lin’s journey traces back to his university days studying software development, when Microsoft served as a key source of inspiration. He admired how the company built computers and Windows, shaping his own ambitions.

While he acknowledges that global reach will take time, his early focus was clear: create software that serves local users, helping businesses run more smoothly and improving people’s lives.

“That’s my dream,” Lin said. “So, when the opportunity arose, I decided to start this HR software solution.”

Like many startup founders, Lin stepped into the unknown, unsure whether clients would trust his product or whether investment would follow.

He also feared launching a solution that might go unused, noting that many software startups fail early. Despite the uncertainties, Lin decided to push forward.

Building trust, one trial at a time

Rather than immediately pitching to clients, Lin began by testing the software internally, refining it to ensure it addressed real workplace needs and functioned reliably.

Once confident in its performance, he approached potential clients and offered free trials in exchange for feedback.

The strategy paid off. “They asked to start paying for it at that point, and that’s how our journey began,” Lin said.

Today, BeOne counts major companies such as AEON Mall and DHL among its clients, with Lin attributing this growth to a focus on functionality over flashy technology. The company has also expanded with the launch of BeHR, a platform dedicated to HR system management.

“At BeHR, we deliver solutions that match our clients’ needs. For example, time-management requirements differ between companies, so we provide flexible systems that adapt to each client’s specific needs,” Lin said.

By leveraging technology as a business solution, owners can monitor staff attendance and manage workforce data via a mobile app, while employees can request leave and permissions with ease.

“To build the BeHR platform, my team and I spent more than a year developing and testing the system to ensure clients can use it with confidence,” Lin said.

He noted that building the company drew on more than 10 years of professional experience, where he developed leadership, management and financial skills critical to launching BeOne Platform. “We didn’t just rely on money and take risks to start a company,” he said.

Opportunity to grow

A major breakthrough came when Be One secured a project with AEON Indonesia, after several teams had failed to resolve persistent system issues.

“We were invited to meet with their team, then flew to Indonesia to inspect the system and identify the problems,” he explained. Lin’s team proposed solutions, which AEON accepted.

They spent one month on-site planning before returning to Cambodia to continue development, followed by around three months fixing the system.

“We are a Cambodian company with no prior international experience, but we were able to take on the challenge and went there without fear of failing,” Lin said, adding that the success with AEON in Indonesia, led to opportunities with AEON in Cambodia.

“We built trust with our client, and they later recommended us to others,” he added.

Strengthening capacity through Techo Startup

Despite his technical expertise, Lin admits that communication was not a natural strength - a hurdle he had to overcome to grow the business. “To follow my dream, I had to commit to doing things I didn’t want to do,” he said.

He later joined accelerator programmes under Techo Startup (TSC) and the Digital Platform Accelerator (DPA), supported by Wing Bank, where he gained practical skills in operations, finance and client targeting.

“I applied these lessons to improve my company’s problem-solving and growth,” Lin told Kiripost, adding that he was surprised the programme included a competition as he had only expected to learn. He ended up placing in the top three, scooping a prize from Wing Bank.

“Relying on your own abilities is good rather than depending on others, so it reduces risk and lowers the chance of failure,” Lin said.

Lin noted that demand for software development talent in Cambodia remains high, with skilled developers in short supply.

While the government continues to push its vision of a digital economy - improving public services and trust through technology and digital payments - Lin stressed the need to build a stronger local talent pool to sustain that growth.

Lin’s recommendations

For aspiring developers, Lin advises focusing on and deepening expertise in specific areas of software development. “Software covers many specialties. Choose the skills you want to master so you can pursue the job you want,” he said.

“Without strengthening your skills, finding work will be more difficult despite strong demand for software talent. During your studies, concentrate on and sharpen specific skills,” Lin added.
